Bristol Airport Masterplan

Participatr created an interactive digital platform to support public consultation by Bristol Airport on their future plans for expansion.

What was the brief?

Bristol Airport is creating a masterplan which sets out its planned transformation to the year 2040. It identifies future infrastructure needs and potential impacts on the natural environment, providing transparency to local communities and aiding the long-term planning for businesses.

In order to support community and stakeholder engagement on the masterplan, before a planning application is submitted to North Somerset Council, Bristol Airport sought to create an interactive online hub to capture feedback on the plans and provide details of how it plans to support 15 million passengers a year by the year 2040.

What did we do?

Participatr was commissioned to create an interactive digital platform to support the public consultation, which would provide detailed information on the plans and provide an opportunity for members of the community and interested stakeholders to comment.

The digital platform was branded in line with Bristol Airport's corporate requirements, meticulously applying the same fonts, colours, graphics and logos that are used across all of the Airport's media channels. The overall visual and content structure of the website was set out in a wireframe document by Copper Consultancy, and Participatr's task was to craft the look and feel of the website to match the specified graphics and text placement, demonstrating the visual and functional flexibility of the platform's front end.

The digital platform featured an interactive masterplan map, allowing visitors to toggle between different masterplan stages to show what is proposed to change within that time frame, and click on features to find out more. The map sat alongside a multi-stage feedback questionnaire to capture feedback on the plans, the data from which was accessed and analysed in real-time by the Airport's consultancy team.

What was the outcome?

  • 2,340 feedback submissions were received through the platform
  • The platform was visited by 24,649 people
  • 65% of visitors used mobile devices, such as smartphones or tablets
